How to adjust my shock absorber?
Adjusting the shock absorber's SAG is the first adjustment to make and it's crucial for our MTBs! It's also very easy to mess up this measurement… so here's how we proceed:
If you are alone, position yourself near a wall (it will help you to hold on at the beginning and end), but it's best to be two for this operation.
Of course, you must be fully equipped as if going for a ride, so that the total weight accurately reflects the real weight in use.
1- Inflate the shock absorber to the base pressure corresponding to your weight. For us, it's easy: it corresponds to approximately your weight multiplied by 2 (to get the equivalent in PSI). So if you weigh 75 kg x 2, that gives you a pressure of 150 PSI. Easy ;-{D. Note that the SAG measurement is always done with the shock absorber in the open position!
2- Then get on your bike, with the saddle low (if you have a telescopic seat post, of course), either holding onto a wall or with the help of a second person. At this point, you've put much more than your simple weight as stress on the suspension. Sit on the saddle, then raise it to your usual pedaling position.
3- Release the brakes that block the suspension's operation and gently vibrate your handlebars to ensure the suspension has settled to the SAG corresponding to your weight.
We're coming to the complex part of the procedure, where your balancing skills can be put into practice!
If there are two of you, it's easy: the second person looks at where the SAG measurement O-ring is located relative to the measurement indicator on the frame. And you're done!!
If you are alone, unfortunately, you will have to push the O-ring up until it touches the shock body, without letting the suspension oscillate, then manage to get off the bike using the wall (still without putting any additional pressure, as this could distort the measurement!) Not easy, we grant you… but doable!
Once dismounted, and if you are sure you haven't distorted the measurement, check where the O-ring is located relative to the indicator.
If you have less SAG than the recommended measurement, you'll need to remove air with the pump; if you have too much, you'll need to add more.
You will find our adjustment tips on page 30 of the Moustache user manual.
