Maintenance of my Moustache electric bike

How to wash and maintain my Moustache electric bike?

For your bike to continue to operate optimally and, above all, to show off on bike paths, it is essential to clean and maintain it regularly. We will guide you to prolong its lifespan and keep it in the best condition to guarantee a riding experience with a Smile ;-{D!

However, it is important to note that there are essential differences between washing an electric bike and a traditional bike.

To take care of your Moustache bike, here is the list of necessary items

  • 1

First, you will need soapy water or a mild detergent for effective, but non-aggressive cleaning.

  • 2

Next, get a sponge or a soft-bristled brush so as not to risk scratching your bike's surface during cleaning.

  • 3

Also, have clean microfiber cloths to gently wipe surfaces without damaging them.

  • 4

A specific lubricant for your bike chain is essential to ensure smooth operation and prolong its lifespan.

  • 5

Don't forget a suitable brake cleaner to maintain their effectiveness and performance.

  • 6

Finally, extra cloths and a garden hose can be useful for a gentle final rinse.

In this article, we have chosen to use specialized products from the Muc Off brand, known for being 100% biodegradable.

5-step maintenance

Step 1: Preparation

  • Before starting, find a suitable place to carry out the cleaning, preferably outdoors.
  • Please note that it is strongly advised against using a high-pressure jet on our Moustache bikes. This could affect the frame and thus damage some of your components (fork, brakes, drivetrain, etc).

Step 2: Frame Cleaning

Your Moustache bike's frame, the central piece that supports every aspect of your riding experience, from robustness during off-road rides to responsiveness during sharp turns in the city, all thanks to our 6061 T4-T6 aluminum. Regular maintenance of this component will make it sparkling new after each wash and allow you to check for any anomalies on it.

  1. Spray water from top to bottom over the entire bike to remove the largest dirt particles and finish with the wheels.
  1. Start by dipping your sponge or brush in soapy water.

3. Gently clean your e-bike frame by rubbing softly to remove dirt and dust.

Stay vigilant in hard-to-reach areas, where dirt tends to accumulate.

4. Rinse the bike with clear water using your hose.

5. Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe down the frame and components, removing any soap residue.

6. Completely dry your bike to prevent water from stagnating and corrosion from appearing.

Step 3: Cleaning the Chain and Drivetrain

The chain and drivetrain are the primary wear components of your Moustache electric assist bike (e-bike). A clean and properly lubricated chain reduces friction and wear, resulting in more efficient power transmission and faster and more quieter gear changes.

  1. 1. Apply a specific detergent to your drivetrain, being careful not to touch the brake pads.

2. Slowly turn the pedals clockwise to run the chain through the brush and remove dirt and oil residue.

(if you turn the pedals counter-clockwise, the chain does not move and the pedals turn in vain)

3. Use a clean cloth to remove excess detergent from the chain.

4. Then apply a suitable lubricant along the entire length of the chain, ensuring it is well distributed.

Do not get lubricant on the brakes. Wipe off excess lubricant with a clean cloth. Be careful not to apply too much, as this could attract more dirt.

Step 4: Brake Cleaning

Brakes are the primary safety components on your Moustache e-bike, and their maintenance should never be neglected. Imagine yourself speeding along on your e-bike, wind in your hair (through your helmet), exploring winding paths or crossing the bustling city. In these moments of adventure, you rely on your brakes to slow down, stop, and sometimes even dodge unexpected obstacles.

  1. 1. Use a brake cleaner and a microfiber cloth to clean the brake discs and calipers. Do not touch with fingers.

2. Spray the cleaner directly onto the brake discs.

3. Gently wipe the brakes with the clean microfiber cloth on which the cleaner has been sprayed until they are clean and dry.

Be careful not to contaminate the discs; therefore, nothing else should touch them.

Step 5: General Check

  1. 1. Check the condition of the tires for any wear (using a wear indicator if possible) or foreign objects. Also ensure they are correctly inflated according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

2. Check cables and housings to ensure they are not damaged or worn.

3. Check the brakes to ensure they are working correctly and are properly adjusted.

4. Check screws and nuts to ensure they are tightly fastened.

5. Thoroughly dry the bike to prevent moisture accumulation and storage. Pay particular attention to Bosch electrical components.

Congratulations! You have now cleaned and maintained your Moustache electric assist bike. By regularly repeating these steps, you will extend the lifespan and value of your e-bike. Do not hesitate to contact your dealer in case of damaged parts or if more technical maintenance is required.
